Its a HOT, HOT summer!

Depending on where you live, you may have had a blistering, hot summer like we’ve had down here in South Louisiana. I’m talking about over 100 degrees every day, real feel in the 100 +teens range. It’s been HOT, needless to say.  Complaining about the heat has become everyday chit-chat for many.  It has affected people in many ways, including foundation issues, dead grass and dying plants. I started out watering my potted plants every morning, like I’ve always done. The heat kept on inching higher and higher each day that passed without an ounce of rain in sight. This kept on until we were in a full-blown drought, dust devils and all.

Nozzles and Traveling Sprinkler Systems

As a result of this horrid drought, we began to water, and water, and water our plants and lawn. I have one of those handy wand nozzles with a million different settings, but I love the gentle shower and misting settings most. Now, my plants and grass did perk up and mostly bounced back in the beginning. As the long hot days continued on, my plants became slowly sadder and sadder looking by the day. I will note that two varieties in my garden were seemingly unaffected and to my surprise looked great. That would be my cross-hybrid Verbena and my Blue Daze. Both of these plants come back year after year no matter the conditions and amaze me each time. So, side note, get you some of those for your garden.

Now, back to the topic of drought. My mother-in-law suggested that we water in the evenings to give the plants time to soak up the water and utilize it before the blistering heat of the day and sun had time to dry it up.  For a time, this seemed to help. At the same time, I noticed my plants getting sunburned and droopy, my grass literally started to crunch when you walked on it.  I don’t typically water my grass, but my neighbors do. I started to feel like our yard was a disgrace on the street. So, I began watering the grass every other day with my Orbit traveling sprinkler. It’s so cute, reminds me of a little tractor and super customizable.  So, here we are, watering in the evening, watering the grass every other day.

Gear Driven Sprinklers

Things were looking up but, still not great. My husband, stepped in and took over. We now have an Orbit Gear Drive Sprinkler for the front yard and an adjustable 6 pattern sprinkler for the back yard flower beds and potted plants. It’s not overkill, we just have options now.  He said, I wasn’t watering long enough and to set the sprinkler for 20 minutes in each area we needed to water.

Temporarily Shade Your Garden

Immediately the grass and plants looked better, but I will NEVER admit that to my husband. Some plants did not totally recover from the extreme heat. They literally just couldn’t’ take the heat and don’t do well no matter how much we water. They will live on but with sunspots and ugly leaves.  Next year we will have to beat the heat and water in this way before it gets to the extreme conditions.  I also looked into cloth shades, “plant huts”   or garden cloches for those plants that just cannot take the scorching sun, even though they are full sun plants. They just aren’t made for desert like conditions. This would have saved some of my prized plants from being singed by this torturous summer. Next year, next year I will be better prepared.  So, my conclusion is that all watering schedules or sprinklers are not created equal. Depending on where you live and the conditions and your plants’ tolerances. You may have to change your “hardheaded ways”(no I am not quoting my husband) and your watering habits and invest in different types of sprinklers.  Just don’t give up on your plants, it will pay off even if they will not shine in all their glory again until next season.
